SPT! Sales Prevention Team

Hammer meets nail.

The SPT-- I call them sales prevention department because they all tend to flock together but exhibit little teamwork, that would require initiative..

The SPT is every business owners' worst ennemy - though most won't admit it.

Even worse than the support staff who make the bulk of the SPT are those with the word "Sales" or "New Business" in their job title who are secretly part of the SPT...

For one-man bands, such as homebased internet business owners, the SPT can be a part of their own brain - this requires a lot of sefl-awereness to fight.

Great points in this post.

All the best,

"Management" is the largest SPT I observe in most companies.

"Easier to bitch than get rich" -- that rhymes and is a neat saying that could be applied to those that complain about high achievers instead of trying to become one.

Tim,

I like your post today. You're right. Most complain and think by complaining they are really doing something about the problem.

Well said, kudos!

I even see examples in the hospital.

Imagine what would happen if sales simply stopped for say 24 hours

I'm not convinced that selling is quite so far above other functions when it comes to corporate success.

Some products are designed so well they sell themselves.

Some marketing is so clever the customer arrives convinced.

Sometimes customer service people generate so much good will that loyalty is created out of crisis.

Sometimes sales people blame all the other functions for their inability to make a sale when the sale won't make itself, which is the point at which they should be really earning their corn.

Often what people think makes the difference between a customer buying something or not buying something is really not the reason at all; sometimes the key to selling is all to do with how the unconscious mind has been influenced.

But, for all of that, sometimes people don't appreciate how important the sales function is and how challenging it can be when the rest of the business doesn't get behind a product or service and do everything to make each customer delighted.

I guess the problem is that everyone has the capacity to be a little ego-centric. And people tend to be painfully aware of the challenges and issues that they face, and assume that everything is just fine for everyone else.

Sales prevention team! That's funny! What exactly do you do and why do you never comment on my blogs! I comment on yours and it is only fair and part of the deal.

If you read Kevin's Vox blog today, you can see everyone's updated feedburner addresses. Mine is http://feeds2.feedburner.com/anthonylemmecom. I don't know if you got the rest but they are up there. Hope all is well, you kind of dropped out for awhile. If I can help in any way let me know. Thanks for getting back to me.

Kind Regards,
Anthony

Sadly enough it seems that some of my best selling has had to be done in one of the support departments.

Nothing is more infuriating as customer than to be made to feel as though someone is doing you a favor by simply doing their job! Sadly, if I receive this type of treatment, I'll often go to that business' competitor the next time. It's the only real option that will send a message.

People in government jobs often have that attitude - they are doing you a favor when actually, they're just doing their job.

Actually people in government jobs act like they are doing you a favor when they are almost doing their jobs.

I concur with Don on this one. Although, that was more my experience in CA and in the city govt jobs. The lady (YES!) at the DMV in San Mateo was surprisingly helpful. Then again, I treated her like a human being and chatted her up. Turns out her sister is a widow as well. I immediately recommended the Grief Recovery Handbook to her.

And here in Nevada, The Secretary of State's Office was SUPER kind and helpful (looks things up for me, gave me the case # to ask or search on) when I was incorporating here. (Talk about breaking open new neuropathways and doing some new things. It was super powerful for me to TAKE CHARGE of my own life to do the baby steps to do that myself. Massively increased my sense of self-efficacy after I'd already done the bran muffin work on completing my emotions around the death of my father from a year ago. Didn't have to wait 5 years to complete the grief.)

Keep up the consistent blog post, Tim.

You're doing great.

Sadly a lot of people simply find it easier to complain than to do anything else.

So what do you do if you suck at selling? I'm not sure I could sell water to a desert wanderer dying of thirst. You sales gurus make it sound and look so easy!
