Fail in business.

Interesting point - you often hear how people measure success. Rarely, will someone discuss how they measure failure. Failure - when viewed in the proper context - is a great foundation for success.

You make an excellent point. People do tend to get obsessed with considering one side of the success coin, but there is plenty to be learned from the other.

I always tell my children that every situation has three sides:

1. Doing what you've always done or seen done

2. Doing the exact opposite

3. The magical third way, where you employ your experience and observation with some new element that you introduce yourself.

Most behaviour, at a psychological level, happens at level 1 or 2.

You are so right, but I am still so afraid of failure.

We measure achievements NOT by how many times we fail, but how many home runs we have.

Fear is false evidence appearing real. Lisa, define what you fear and it is diminished. See it for what it is and is not. 93% of the time it is mental crap you made up. Hence you can change it.

Tim, We often learn more about ourselves and about others during the process of what we might call "failueres". And when we finally DO succeed, it is all those things we learned while we were "failing", those lessons, that we have now burned into our minds, that are causing us to succeed..

Failure is enourmously valuable - as long as we learn from it - fail forward we say around here. If you don't fail regularly, you are not pushing your envelope. Of course, learn from others mistakes as well, when you can. This process makes home runs natural.

Great post Tim. Your writing is getting better and better.

We learn some of the greatest lessons of our lives through our perceived "failures".

It could very well be that we were taught early on that failure was just the worst thing that could happen. I don't remember anyone early on telling me to use failure to learn, to change, to grow. Lord is it any mystery that it's this looming threat??

Thanks

We should never discount failure. That is how we learn. So many people chase the "Success" without knowing what they are after.

People go after what they think is "Success" with all the Gurus, Books, Audios and so on you spoke about. They get all this information, but never do one damn thing with it then complain after they don't have the"success."

The big pivitol point is to (Know What Success) means and how it shows up to them as an individual.

My definition of success is using the skills, abilities and talents you have at the very, very best you can. Inspite of our failures. To keep pushing forward inspite of the opinions of others.

Knowing what we don't want is just as important as knowing what we do. It's like when you vote. Even if you don;t have something you want to vote for, you can usually find something to vote against.

It is always best to work both ends against the middle.

Yes, I fail all the time. And there a re always many lessons to learn. Your point about clearly defining what success means to us is excellent. How can we know when we succeed if we don't know what it looks like?!

Great post. Food for thought!

I have decided not to call it failure... that could make me feel bad about myself and then i might need federally funded therapy :0 Failure is a part of the learning process. every time the end result is an undesired outcome it makes you look for new and better ways to get something done. failure is not to be confused with giving up.

Tim,

I call failure experience. I have had my fair share but I can expect more experience in the future. Ultimate failure is not using your personal power to take action.

Hi Tim,

Great post...so many things in life have come from what was first a failure! I don't think I could come up with anyone who succeeded without first having experienced failure

Many people are so busy trying to learn new information that they fail to do what they already know they need to do.

These people are also attracted to shiny sparkly objects... and it is a fate that befalls many corporate managers who attend whizbang seminars and the staff dreads their return.

Here is a quote from Michael Jordan that I love.

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Success and failure are words that require definition by me. What someone else sees as a failure on my part may 1) not be a part of my rating system or 2) viewed as a succesful learning opportunity. It's all in how I frame it. "They" aren't in charge of how I look at what success and failure mean.
